Quinault Indian Nation Settlement to Conserve Marbled Murrelet Habitat
 

WASHINGTON - On Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, Interior Secretary Gale Norton and Quinault Indian Nation President Pearl Capoeman-Baller will sign an agreement to preserve more than 4,000 acres of forest habitat for the endangered marbled murrelet. Representatives of the U.S. Department of Justice and the Trust for Public Land also will sign the settlement.

Under the agreement, Interior will purchase conservation easements on Quinault timberlands on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state. The Trust for Public Lands, a national conservation group, will provide some of the funding for the purchase and assist the Quinault Indian Nation with its natural resource planning.

The signing will take place at the Main Interior Building in Room 5160 at
11:45 a.m. Secretary Norton and President Capoeman-Baller will deliver brief remarks before signing the agreement. A news media availability will follow.
