Interior Assistant Secretary Watson to Address Commonwealth North in Anchorage Feb. 24

The Assistant Secretary will focus on Alaska's role in energy and recreation

WASHINGTON -- Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Land and Minerals Management, Rebecca Watson will travel to Anchorage, Alaska, Monday, Feb.2 4, 2003, to address Commonwealth North. The Assistant Secretary's remarks will focus on the important role Alaska play in the nation's energy and recreation future. She will also discuss the importance of making lands available to fast-growing areas and providing opportunities for recreation and conservation.

"We share mutual goals in the stewardship of America's public lands and the future of Alaska," Watson said. "By working together as partners, we can improve the management of our lands and effectively manage our natural resources."

Watson was nominated by President George W. Bush Nov. 2001, and confirmed by unanimous consent of the U.S. Senate Jan. 25, 2002. She is listed in Who's Who in American Law, and Who's Who in American Women and has served in leadership positions in the American Bar Association for more than a decade. She helped to establish Wyoming's first statewide historic preservation organization and served as its president.

Assistant Secretary Watson has administrative and managerial responsibility for the Bureau of Land Management, the Minerals Management Service and the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement.
