Secretary Norton Announces Jamestown 400th Commemoration Commission
(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Interior Secretary Gale Norton today appointed the members of the Jamestown 400th Commemoration Commission.
"The Jamestown 400th Commemoration Commission will be instrumental in helping celebrate the major significance the founding of the Jamestown colony has played in our nation's history," Secretary Norton said. "Our commission will ensure a successful national observance of the Jamestown 2007 anniversary and work closely with the commonwealth of Virginia to showcase Jamestown's rich natural and cultural resources."
In December 2000, Congress passed the Jamestown 400th Commemoration Commission Act, directing the Interior Secretary to appoint 16 members to the commission to plan, develop and execute programs and activities to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown.
Secretary Norton appointed Frank B. Atkinson the chairman of the commission.
Frank B. Atkinson
Frank Atkinson is Chairman of McGuire Woods Consulting
LLC and a partner in McGuire Woods LLP. His practice focuses on state and local
government relations, economic development, privatization and public-private
partnerships, education, and elections and voting rights. As an attorney he
has extensive experience in the areas of constitutional, election and education
law and commercial and constitutional litigation. He served as a member of Governor
Allen's cabinet as Counselor and Director of Policy, is currently the Vice Chairman
of the Jamestown 2007 Steering Committee and is on the Board of Trustees of
the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation.
Stephen R. Adkins
A resident of Virginia, Stephen Adkins is active in civic organizations in Charles City where he
resides. He has worked for DuPont for 37 years; he is currently Human Resource Manager. He serves
as the Chief of the Chickahominy Indian Tribe and has served on the Virginia Commission on Indians.
He and his wife own and operate a trucking company for which he is Vice President. He has served on
the Charles City Council School Board for 21 years.
Warren Billings
Warren Billings is a native Virginian. He is a Distinguished Professor and Chairman of the History
Department at the University of New Orleans. A renowned scholar, Billings has authored numerous
books on the subject of early 17th century Virginia and Jamestown. He is chairman for the national
APVA Jamestown Rediscovery Advisory Board and is the Historian of the Supreme Court of
Louisiana.
Thomas J. Bliley Jr.
A native Virginian, Thomas Bliley served on the Richmond City Council from 1968 to 1977. He was
Vice Mayor of Richmond from 1968 to 1970 and Mayor from 1970 to 1977. He represented Virginia's
7th District in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1978 to 2000. Since his retirement from
Congress he has been active in Virginia issues and is currently working with former Virginia Gov.
Douglas Wilder to improve Richmond's governmental structure.
Nancy N. Campbell
A leader in the national preservation movement, Nancy Campbell has been active in historic
preservation issues for more than 30 years. She was active in Connecticut and New York for many
years prior to moving to Virginia where she currently resides. She has served as a member of the
Board of Advisors of the National Trust for Historic Preservation; was elected to the Trust's Board of
Trustees and served as it's Chairman for three years beginning in 1996. She is a valued board member
of many organizations including Philadelphia's Gateway Visitors Center Corporation. She is serving
as chair of the National Trust's first ever $125 million capital campaign. She plays an active role in
activities of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation where her husband is President.
H. Benson Dendy III
Virginian Benson Dendy is President of Vectre Corporation, a government relations firm based in
Virginia. He served on the senior staffs of Virginia Govs. Charles S. Robb and Gerald L. Baliles. A
former President of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation Board of Directors, he is currently the
treasurer of the Foundation's Board of Trustees. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the
Jamestown 2007 Steering Committee. He serves on the Board of Trustees of the Valentine Museum, is
a Director of the Virginia YMCA and a Director of Carver Promise.
Suzanne Owen Flippo
Suzanne Flippo has a long and distinguished career of community service and has served in various
capacities in numerous organizations in Virginia. She is currently deeply involved in the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation. She serves on the Executive Committee of 2007 Steering Committee and is
Chairwoman of its Program and Events Committee.
Roxane Gilmore
Roxane Gilmore is a professor of classics at Randolph
Macon College. As Virginia's First Lady she was active in various activities
that promoted historic preservation and history. She was honorary chairwoman
of the Jamestown 2007 Steering Committee and has served on the Board of the
Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation.
Michael P. Gleason
Michael P. Gleason, a Virginia native, is President and Chief Executive Officer of Gleason Publishing
Inc., publisher of VIRGINIA, a magazine devoted to history and travel in Virginia. He is a recognized
Virginia history authority and is the author of numerous books on various aspects of Virginia's history.
He has more than 35 years experience in state and national commemorative events planning,
communications, public relations, and fund-raising. He was a administrator of Virginia regional
American Bicentennial operation; he helped plan the 1976 Virginia visit of Queen Elizabeth II. He
serves on the National Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Council.
Steve Griles
Steve Griles is the Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior. Griles was formerly a
principal with National Environmental Strategies Inc., a consulting firm providing advice to
companies, trade associations and others with regard to policy, regulatory, environmental and energy
issues at the federal and state levels. Griles was Executive Assistant Director of the Virginia
Department of Conservation and Economic Development from 1970 to 1981. Griles graduated from
the University of Richmond in 1970. Griles resides in Falls Church, Va.
Ann W. Loomis
Ann Loomis is Legislative Director for Senator John Warner and has been instrumental in that capacity
developing and directing major initiatives in Virginia with regard to natural and historic resource issues
and needs. She has worked since its earliest stages in the drafting of the Jamestown 400th
Commemoration Commission Act and has worked closely with the many individuals and organizations
involved in the commission and has a broad and deep understanding of the many facts that must be
considered in planning the commemoration.
Fran P. Mainella
Fran Mainella is the 16th Director, and the first woman, to lead the National Park Service in the
organization's history. Appointed by President George W. Bush and confirmed by the U.S. Senate, she
is a career professional in park and recreation management, with more than 30 years of experience.
John L. Nau III
John Nau III is President and Chief Executive Officer of Silver Eagle Distributors L.P. In 2001
President George W. Bush appointed him to a four-year term as Chairman of the Advisory Council on
Historic Preservation. Nau is Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Civil War Preservation
Trust and a Charter Member of the Monticello Cabinet. Nau is a graduate of the University of Virginia,
where he earned a degree in history.
Daphne Maxwell Reid
Known for her roles on television, Daphne Maxwell Reid is also an independent Virginia
businesswoman. With her husband and two other individuals, Reid co-founded and is principal partner
in New Millennium Studios, the first full-service film studio in Virginia. She also created a new
product and project for the McCall Pattern Company. She and her husband founded The Tim Reid
Scholarship Foundation that raises scholarship funds annually to assist college students in Historically
Black Colleges and Universities in Virginia. She has received numerous honors and is a regular
speaker discussing entrepreneurial aspects of the entertainment field.
Alexander (Sandy) Rives
A native Virginian, Sandy is currently the Superintendent of Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County
Battlefields Memorial National Military Park. A 25+-year veteran of the National Park Service, he has
served in numerous capacities in national parks in Virginia and is widely respected for his insights into
and understanding of national park issues. Recently, he directed the planning and special resource
study effort for the Shenandoah Valley Battlefield Historic District.
Malfourd Whitney (Bo) Trumbo
Bo Trumbo is a native of Virginia, an attorney
and Senator for Virginia's 22nd Senatorial District. He serves as
Chairman of the Virginia Senate's Rules Committee and is a member of the Senate
Finance Committee. He is a member of the Jamestown 2007 Steering Committee and
is a member of the Board of Trustees for the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation,
where he serves as Vice-Chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee.
