Located 2,600 miles southwest of Hawaii, the National Park of American Samoa is the most remote unit of the National Park System and the U.S. National Park south of the Equator. The Park spreads across three islands, 9,500 acres of tropical rainforest, and 4,000 acres of ocean, including coral reefs. While remote, the islands of American Samoa, true to the meaning of the word Samoa (Islands of Sacred Earth), are welcoming and offer beautiful landscapes and centuries of culture and history.

The plantings of cherry trees originated in 1912 as a gift of friendship to the People of the United States from the People of Japan. In Japan, the flowering cherry tree, or "Sakura," is an exalted flowering plant. The beauty of the cherry blossom is a potent symbol equated with the evanescence of human life and epitomizes the transformation of Japanese culture throughout the ages.

The South Central Climate Science Center is hosting a summer undergraduate internship opportunity from July 20 to August 9, 2014, for ten students of underrepresented minorities interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields (for example, anthropology, civil engineering, computer science, meteorology).

Interns will be involved in hands-on activities related to climate research that will allow them to see the direct impacts of climate variability and change on forest ecosystems in Oklahoma, coastal areas in Louisiana, and the Texas Hill Country.
Internship participants will travel across the South Central United States to visit university campuses and field locations and will work side-by-side with researchers. Interns will spend one week with the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University, one week with Louisiana State University, and one week with Texas Tech University. In addition, interns will learn basic videography skills and will capture still and video footage to contribute to a short 3-5 minute teaser that encapsulates the internship experience.
