Valerie Lavender, Chief of Detention The mission of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Justice Services, Division of Corrections is to promote, preserve, and deliver security, safety, and quality corrections services to Indian Country. Message from the Associate Director of Corrrections:The Bureau of Indian Affairs, Division of Corrections was established in January of 2005, to address detention conditions based on a Federal assessment of Indian country detention facilities, conducted in 2004 by the Department of Interior Office of the Inspector General. Under the direction of the Associate Director of Corrections, five central office staff located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, coordinate the day to day operations of the 19 BIA detention facilities located in various districts across the United States. In addition to management of BIA detention facilities, the Division of Corrections is also tasked with providing technical assistance to Tribes in all areas of correctional management.
