FERS Retirement and Benefits

 (The following information is taken from the CSRS and FERS Handbook, Chapter 46.)

ELIGIBILITY FOR VOLUNTARY FF/LEO RETIREMENT - FERS

  • Age 50; and 20 years COVERED AND CREDITABLE service
      
  • Any age; and 25 years COVERED AND CREDITABLE service

At time of application for retirement, the employee must be in a position subject to FERS coverage.

NOTE: Not required to be in a covered firefighter or law enforcement officer position at time of retirement.

The annuity paid to the survivor of an employee who dies in service without reaching these minimum age and service requirements is pro-rated based on service approved for special retirement.

SEPARATION FROM COVERED POSITION: The employee must be separated from a position covered by retirement deductions.

ERRONEOUS SEPARATIONS: If the employee is separated for retirement under the special provisions and OPM finds that the employee does not meet one of the above eligibility requirements, the separation may be found to be erroneous.
