Recent Accomplishments

The Department continues to institutionalize technology transfer programs within the Department to enable all bureaus to more effectively and efficiently fulfill their missions using tools and processes authorized by the Federal Technology Transfer Act of 1986 and related legislation.

DOI's technology transfer activities provide critical information and technologies to improve our understanding of, and ability to address, key issues such as climate change, drought, wildland fire, threatened and endangered species. During FY 2021, DOI:

  • Engaged in 429 Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs) and at least 625 other collaborative R&D relationships;
  • Disclosed two new inventions, filed one new patent application, and received one new patent;
  • Managed 58 active licenses for inventions and other intellectual property, which collectively earned $67,694; and
  • Published over 900 reports, books, papers, fact sheets, and other documents.
