Facts:

Gear restrictions will be implemented

Beginning on May 20 on the lower river, and starting slightly later upriver, gear restrictions will be implemented. Subsistence fishing will be limited to gill nets of 4” mesh or less and limited to 60 feet in length and 45 meshes deep. Only set nets will be allowed. Set nets is defined as a gillnet that has been intentionally set, staked, anchored, or otherwise fixed.

Dip-net fishery

A dip-net fishery for chum and sockeye salmon will be opened in mid-June to provide subsistence users with additional opportunities to harvest these species. Any king salmon caught during dip-netting must be released back into the water immediately.

If the king salmon run is favorable

If by late June, the Bethel test fishery indicates that the strength and timing of the king salmon run is favorable, and if the ratio of chum and sockeye to king salmon is high, we intend to initiate brief openings in the last week of June for the use of 6” mesh gill nets to allow for targeted harvest of chum and sockeye.

Permit for cultural and social purposes

If early season run indicators are strong and/or if compliance with restrictions has been favorable, a limited harvest of king salmon (not to exceed 1,000 fish drainage-wide) may be allowed for cultural and social purposes. This harvest would be allocated via permits to the 32 communities qualifying for king salmon harvest this season.

Federal Fishing Permit:

Cultural and Social

With the Social and Cultural Permit fishing will be allowed Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM beginning Wednesday, June 11 and ending Monday, June 30, 2014. This permit expires and is invalid once the community harvest quota is achieved or on July 1, 2014, whichever comes first.

The Community Representative is responsible for coordinating the fishing activities of designated fishers to prevent exceeding the community's harvest limit listed on this permit. Communities must ensure that Federally qualified users within each community have fair and equal access to the harvested resource.

Authorized gear type is 6" mesh gill nets, fish wheels, beach seines, rod and reel, or dip nets.

The Community Representative issued this permit is responsible for reporting all harvest (including combined designated fishermen harvest) to the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge each week, prior to noon on Mondays (June 16, 23, and 30). The final season-end harvest report is due on July 3, 2014.
