Federal Subsistence Board Closes Marten Trapping on Federal Lands on Kuiu Island
The Federal Subsistence Board has closed Federal public lands on Kuiu Island within Unit 3 to the trapping of marten from January 1, 2014 to February 15, 2014. This action is in response to conservation concerns raised by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
Recent studies continue to indicate the marten population on Kuiu Island is among the lowest in Southeast Alaska. A high natural mortality rate and continued low recruitment has resulted in a concern for the marten population. However, historical use by Federally qualified subsistence users has been extremely low. Reducing the trapping season to one month from December 1, 2013 to December 31, 2013 for Federally qualified subsistence users should provide some opportunity for harvest while providing a measure of conservation for marten. Additionally, sealing of marten is required and would allow collection of biological samples and use information for management.
