Narrator: This summer President Obama is calling on all Americans to participate in our nation’s recovery and renewal by volunteering in our communities. The summer initiative is called “United We Serve.”
Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar joined volunteer and youth groups at Shenandoah National Park to pull invasive weeds as part of the campaign’s kickoff Monday, June 22nd.
Secretary Salazar speaking to SCA volunteers:
“Tell me what you’re doing, tell me about the SCA.”
Secretary Salazar:
“President Obama today across the country marks a beginning of a campaign called United We Serve and what you are seeing here were a number of people, great volunteers and young people all coming together saying that we are going to be part of part of the solution for America. As we stand up our economy again, as we deal with issues of healthcare, as we deal with the issues of energy and climate change, we’re all going to be engaged in it as part of the American spirit. And I can think of no better place to spend my time today than here in Shenandoah.”
Secretary Salazar speaking to YCC volunteers:
“You guys it’s your second year? Were you on all of last summer?”
Narrator: Several groups participated in the event including the Youth Conservation Corps, Volunteers in the Parks and the Student Conservation Association.
