Mission and Overview
The U.S. Department of the Interior's Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization (OSDBU) was created as part of the Small Business Act (SBA) to ensure that small and disadvantaged businesses are provided maximum practicable opportunity to participate in the agency's contracting process. Pursuant to Public Law 95-507, every federal agency is required to have an OSDBU.
The primary responsibility of the OSDBU is to ensure that small businesses are treated fairly and have an opportunity to compete and be selected for a fair amount of the agency's contracting and subcontracting dollars. Small businesses play a significant role in advancing the Department's goals and support Interior's contributions to the Nation's economy. In 2013, Interior's programs contributed $371 billion to the U.S economy and supported 2.3 million jobs.
Small Businesses contribute innovation, job growth, increased competition, and quality production of goods and services to our National economy. This expansive capability demands including small business to the greatest extent practicable when making Federal contract award decisions. For the Department, the capabilities available through small business provide more flexible and affordable solutions for our program offices.
