BOEM is the Interior Department's lead agency for the National Ocean Policy's Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning initiative. It is working closely with other Interior bureau's and Federal agencies to support the President's National Ocean Policy Initiative.
BOEM is the only governmental agency authorized to grant renewable energy, marine mineral, and oil and gas leases on the outer continental shelf (OCS). Under the statutory mandate, BOEM is required to balance resource exploration and development with environmental protection and stewardship. The Bureau has embraced a science-based, decision-making framework to manage OCS resources and to provide a balanced understanding of key issues across all major sectors and uses. In coordination with other Interior Bureaus, it is now extending this approach to inform regional ocean planning and decision making.Learn more: www.boem.gov/NOP/
