About the Office of Appraisal Services

The Office of Appraisal Services (OAS), which is under the supervision of the Deputy Chief Appraiser, conducts appraisals, appraisal reviews and appraisal consulting of real property interests in support of the Secretary of the Interior’s Indian trust asset management responsibilities. The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and tribes that contract or compact under P.L. 93-638 request appraisal services from OAS.

OAS appraisal services support the following real estate transactions:

  • Sales
  • Agricultural and non-agricultural leases
  • Rights-of-way
  • Land exchanges
  • Acquisitions
  • Trespass settlement
  • Other types of real estate transactions

OAS has 12 regional offices located in close proximity to the 12 BIA regional offices throughout Indian country. Regional Supervisory Appraisers are responsible for managing the appraisal workload within their regions.
