About the Office of Appraisal Services
The request for appraisal services determines the market value for various real estate transactions and provides beneficiaries with information about their trust asset. The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and contract or compact tribes operating the real estate services program request appraisals to support the following types of real estate transactions:
- Agriculture leases
- Business leases
- Land exchanges
- Other types of real estate transactions
The OAS Director has supervision of 12 regional offices aligned with the 12 BIA regional offices throughout Indian country. In each regional office is a Regional Supervisory Appraiser who is responsible for the incoming appraisal services and managing appraisal assignments.
OAS also supports the Land Buy-Back Program for Tribal Nations by providing land valuation services. Land valuation, a technical process that provides a baseline or benchmark, enables decisions to be made about fair market values.
