About the Office of Appraisal Services
The Office of Appraisal Services (OAS), which is under the supervision of the Director, conducts appraisals, appraisal reviews, and appraisal consulting of real property interests in support of the Secretary of the Interior’s Indian trust asset management responsibilities. The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and tribes that contract or compact under P.L. 93-638 request appraisal services from OAS.
Appraisals are critical to the management of trust land. They are used to determine the fair market value of the use of an Indian trust asset. If someone wants to set up a grazing permit or build a communications tower on Indian trust land, an appraisal is required to provide the beneficiary with information on the fair market value of that activity.
OAS appraisal services support the following real estate transactions:
- Agricultural and non-agricultural leases
- Land exchanges
- Trespass settlement
- Other types of real estate transactions
The office of the Director is located at 4400 Masthead Street, NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico 87109. Contact the office by phone at 505-816-1318.
OAS has 12 regional offices located in close proximity to the 12 BIA regional offices throughout Indian country. Regional Supervisory Appraisers are responsible for managing the appraisal workload within their regions.
OAS appraisers strictly follow the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) and Uniform Appraisal Standards for Federal Land Acquisitions (UASFLA) guidelines. Each OAS appraiser has a Certified General Appraiser state license.OAS Mission Statement
