People and Place: Understanding Salt
River Bay

Bio:
Ben Andrews, a New Jersey native, was inspired by the extraordinary terrain and diverse ecology that make up St. Croix. Throughout the design process, he strove to conserve and protect natural resources and reestablish critical native plant life affected by invasive species and natural disasters. He believes the Salt River Bay site has a bright future and will serve as a model for ecological improvement on the island.

Christine Rung graduated from Rutgers University with dual degrees in landscape architecture and art history, reflecting her interests in historic and cultural landscapes as well as architecture. Bio:
At 15, Jason Benson founded Advanced Design Landscaping in central New Jersey. He sold the business to pursue a career in design before graduating from Rutgers with a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture. He joined Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, Inc., where he is working on the 2030 New York University Master Plan. He plans to attend graduate school, continue his design career and teach at a university.

Bio:
Jenna Gatto grew up in the Pine Barrens section of southern New Jersey. Her exposure to this unique ecosystem inspired her broader interest in protecting sensitive ecosystems. She explored this idea by integrating her design for Salt River Bay with the cultures of St. Croix.

Bio:
Michael Saltarella graduated from Rutgers with a degree in landscape architecture. Originally from Edison, New Jersey, he stumbled upon landscape architecture in college. He has an admiration for architecture, a curiosity for the built environment, and an interest in how economic and environmental trends affect design. He is planning to pursue a master’s degree in architecture and work on projects related to ecological design for new urban infrastructures. Michael works for Groundswell Design Group in Hopewell N.J.

Nicholas Grandi, a recent graduate of Rutgers’ Landscape Architecture program, has a passion for ecological design. During his visit to St. Croix, he was impressed by the power of the ocean as well as the dramatic landscape. His design seeks to restore the cultural and natural resources within the Salt River Bay through a system of “green fingers” extending throughout the landscape.

Bio:
Sarah Nitchman grew up in New York City and was introduced to the field of Landscape Architecture at her high school, which had the city’s only agricultural program. Her background, travel experiences and training have inspired her interests in regenerative ecology, urban agriculture and postindustrial sites and their potential for reuse. Her work on St. Croix focused on the potential of a landscape to express and support a culture’s identity.

The Many Faces of St. Croix

Bio:
While visiting St Croix, the layered and complex history of St. Croix made a big impact on Victoria Scott’s impression of the place. She sought to express this layering in her site design, through both architecture and the landscape and hopes that, in doing so, Salt River Bay becomes a site where many aspects of the island interact. A graduate of Rutgers, she works at M. Paul Friedberg and Partners in Manhattan.
