Passports and Visas

The Passport and Visa staff is responsible for issuing passports and visas to DOI employees (except BOR and USGS) traveling on official business for the Department of the Interior.  Additionally, the staff maintains and stores passports/visas until they are needed.  As necessary, the staff communicates with the various embassies and the State Department to ensure the employee has all the necessary documents to successfully complete their travel.

Passports

In order to have adequate lead-time for processing passports, we require information 4 - 6 weeks prior to when the passport is needed.  The required form (see below) along with two pictures must accompany the application.

Visas

In regards to visas, they vary by embassy but most can be processed within two weeks (although visas for Russia take at least a month). We require a signed copy of the DI-1175 when requesting a visa. You may access the form via this website:

Other

The safekeeping memo (see link below) should only be used by those employees that travel frequently – especially to Canada and Mexico.  Employees should return their passport to the passport office within two weeks of completing their travel.
