Current Interns

Ariane Burwell

Coming from a diverse educational background, I have a well-defined interest in fostering sustainable building and growth. Through my internship at OEPC, I have focused on understanding natural, cultural and historic issues that may result from the Military Buildup on Guam. As a facet of this, I am working with several organizations to explore applicability of renewable forms of power generation, including but not limited to thin film, to supply increasing demand on Guam.

Kimberly Fong

A Bay Area native, my educational and career goals reflect the environmental focus that permeates California’s political and economic agenda. I graduated from UC Berkeley with a double major in Economics and Political Science, and intend to pursue graduate study in environmental law and/or environmental economics. While interning at OEPC, I recognized the lack of standardized management procedures in response to increasing occurrences of biofuel spills. I am currently researching federal, state and local emergency response plans to biodiesel spills in marine environments, suggesting improvements to response plans, and compiling available information regarding the anatomy of biodiesel incidents. My findings will be presented at the 2009 Clean Pacific Conference in Portland, OR.

Claire Marana

As a graduate with a Neuroscience degree from Wellesley College, I found a true passion for environmental protection late in my undergraduate studies. While studying in Mexico, I gained valuable insight into the complexities of environmental policy – from issue identification, field research, and stakeholder analyses to enforcement and compliance. In 2008 I returned to Mexico with a grant to investigate stakeholder involvement in policymaking decisions. My experiences have given me an appreciation for the tremendous scope and gravity of environmental issues we face. Through interning at OEPC, I hope to gain an understanding of how environmental policy works in real-world scenarios and narrow my focus for graduate work.

Recent Interns

Derek Hoye

Raised in Santa Cruz, California I developed a humbling respect for the environment. My educational as well as career goals continue to reflect this connection with nature. I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of California Santa Barbara earning two BA degrees; one in Business Economics and the second in Law and Society. Currently, I am pursing my JD at Golden Gate University School of Law seeking an Environmental Law Specialization Certificate. After I graduate in May of 2009 I will begin a career with a focus in sustainable business.

Alexandra Leumer

I was born and raised in San Francisco and graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a BA in political science. I retuned to San Francisco to study environmental law at Golden Gate University (GGU) and am currently in my third year. In addition to interning at OEPC, I am a member of the Environmental Law Society at GGU and an assistant editor of the Environmental Law Journal. Upon graduating, I hope to practice in the field of environmental policy.
