RECORDS MANAGEMENT GUIDANCE FOR NEW FEDERAL EXECUTIVES AND POLITICAL APPOINTEES

Now that the political transition is nearing completion, many new Federal executives and political appointees have come on-board and will continue to arrive over the next several months. Records management is one of the topics that is being addressed in briefings for new political appointees. Records created by top-level executive branch officials have continuing value for the Government and for future historical and research uses. To ensure that Federal agency officials are reminded that official records must remain in the custody of the agency, National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) issued Bulletin No. 2003-03, dated May 16, 2000. To help Federal officials gain a clear understanding of the applicable laws governing official records and personal collections of papers, NARA published the pamphlet "Documenting Your Public Service." Both of these publications are available on NARA's website.

NEW DOI "PERSONAL PAPERS" BROCHURE: A synopsis of the information found in the above referenced guidance documents is available at the following the Records Management Program website to assist in distinguishing between Federal records and personal papers.

NEW "MANAGING ELECTRONIC-MAIL" BROCHURE: A newly revised brochure in a user friendly format to assist employees by providing basic records management guidance relating to electronic mail records.
