Enclaves

Defining enclaves, and associating systems with enclaves, are DEAR functions; they are not part of the wizard. Instructions about enclaves are included in this tutorial for convenience.

What is an enclave?

enclaveAn enclave is a group of hardware and software systems that all have the same security C&A process. For example, if a state has fifteen field offices with their own LANs and supported applications, the field office LAN and applications could be put in the same enclave as the state office LAN and applications. Associating them makes C&A easier because you can treat them as one system for C&A purposes. As shown at right, you can have enclaves at different levels; the two rules of enclaves are that they can't overlap and everything must fit in the enclave. DEAR will be the source of record for which systems belong to an enclave, and what the enclave C&A status is. The information you’ll be adding will help clarify DEAR’s enclave reports.

Where do I get the information?

IAWG members should get enclave information from bureau IT security managers (BITSMs). This information will include names and descriptions of enclaves, names and versions of the systems that are members of the enclaves, and any sub-enclaves that are members of the enclave. You’ll enter the information into your BEAR, with the help of the IEA support team and this tutorial, and that information will get copied into DEAR.

Is there a template I should use?

There is no template for enclave information. The data should be in soft copy, but it can be in any spreadsheet or table format.

When do I start?

Contact your BITSM as soon as possible, because it may take a while to track down the C&A information. You can prepare for meeting with your BITSM by running the Enclave Report in DEAR, to see what enclave information DEAR already has for your organization.

How do I load the data?

See the screen shot below. In the encyclopedia browser on DEAR's main screen, click the System tab, then in the window select "Definitions", then select "System". From the list that appears, double-click on the system which you want to designate as an enclave. After designating it, you can associate other systems with it. If you are starting with a system that is already an enclave, go ahead and associate it with other systems.
