Background
The National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) membership list
shows how many Interior agencies are involved with this modernization blueprint. Wildland Fire community within the Department of the Interior is comprised of the following agencies:
- Bureau of Land Management (DOI)
- Fish and Wildlife Service (DOI)
- National Park Service (DOI)
- Bureau of Indian Affairs (DOI)
- United States Geological Survey (DOI) - Support role with Science and Mapping programs
The DOI agencies firefighting efforts are closely managed through the Office of Wildland Fire Coordination as well as the US Forest Service fire-fighting program. The overall mission of protecting the land, public and private property and lives on or near the DOI managed lands is critical and complex. Wildland fires don’t conveniently follow jurisdictional boundaries set forth by land ownership or stewardship. The reality is that many federal partners, state and local government entities are required to perform the mission of Wildland Fire Management at tremendous expense.
A Cost analysis demonstrates the costs of fire suppression on federal lands and its unpredictable demand. The scale and unpredictability of fires and their behavior introduce very different types of IT challenges than many government IT efforts. As well, cost analsysis demonstrates the significant role the USFS plays in addressing this mission.
