THIS WEEK… AT INTERIOR…

NEARLY HALF A BILLION DOLLARS IS ON ITS WAY TO HELP REPAIR THE DAMAGE LEFT BEHIND BY SUPER STORM SANDY. THIS WEEK THE DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR ANNOUNCED A PLAN TO RELEASE FOUR-HUNDRED SEVENTY FIVE MILLION DOLLARS IN EMERGENCY DISASTER RELIEF FUNDING… THE MONEY WILL BE USED TO REPAIR AND REBUILD DOZENS OF PARKS, REFUGES, AND OTHER INTERIOR SITES THAT WERE DAMAGED WHEN SANDY SWEPT ASHORE IN OCTOBER. INTERIOR SECRETARY SALLY JEWELL SAYS THE FUNDING WILL HELP GET OUR PARKS, REFUGES, BEACHES, AND PUBLIC LANDS FULLY OPERATIONAL AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC THIS SUMMER.

THE SECRETARY THIS WEEK TRAVELED TO HOUSTON TO TAKE PART IN THE 2013 OFFSHORE TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE. ONLY THE SECOND SECRETARY IN 10 YEARS TO VISIT THE OTC, SECRETARY JEWELL TOURED THE EXHIBITION FLOOR AND TALKED TO OFFSHORE OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY STAKEHOLDERS… IT WAS ALSO A CHANCE FOR HER TO GET A FIRSTHAND LOOK AT CURRENT AND DEVELOPING TECHNOLOGIES USED FOR OFFSHORE EXPLORATION AND PRODUCTION.

THE SECRETARY WAS THE KEYNOTE SPEAKER THIS WEEK AT THE WHITE HOUSE FORUM ON ASIAN AMERICAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDER HERITAGE... PART OF THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION’S EFFORT UNDER THE AMERICA’S GREAT OUTDOORS INITIATIVE, TO COMMEMORATE AND TELL A MORE INCLUSIVE STORY OF ALL AMERICANS IN OUR NATIONAL PARK SYSTEM.

The lens through which we tell the story of America is not necessarily the lens that is America. And that is what you're all being asked to participate in through this effort, which is, for the Asian American Pacific Islander community, how do we embrace and understand the culture, the history, the values of the Asian American Pacific Islander community in shaping who the United States is, what we have become and where we're going.

We've really brought you together with a single, fundamental purpose, and that is, we need your help. We need your leadership, and we need your stories.

TWO INTERIOR AGENCIES TAKING PROACTIVE STEPS WHEN IT COMES TO FIGHTING FIRES… IN TOK, ALASKA U-S FISH AND WILDLIFE CREWS ARE JOINING STATE CREWS TO CREATE FIREBREAKS TO ROB A POTENTIAL WILDFIRE OF FUEL… THEN USING *THAT* FUEL TO HELP HEAT A LOCAL SCHOOL INSTEAD OF USING MORE EXPENSIVE DIESEL FUEL.

AND IN NEVADA’S ELY DISTRICT THE BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT HAS GRADUATED ITS LATEST CLASS OF SECOND GRADERS, AFTER THE YOUNGSTERS TOOK PART IN WILDFIRE AWARENESS TRAINING… THE ANNUAL EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE COMBINES CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION WITH HANDS ON TRAINING USING THE FIREFIGHTER’S TOOLS OF THE TRADE.

AND THE DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR IS JOINING COMMUNITIES AND ORGANIZATIONS ACROSS THE NATION TO TAKE PART IN NATIONAL BIKE MONTH, AND THE *FEDERAL* BIKE TO WORK CHALLENGE. LAST YEAR THE BIKE TO WORK CHALLENGE INVOLVED HUNDREDS OF RIDERS REPRESENTING TWENTY DIFFERENT FEDERAL AGENCIES… THE CYCLISTS LOGGED OVER FIVE-THOUSAND BIKE TRIPS MEASURING 65-THOUSAND MILES COAST TO COAST, SAVING MORE THAN THREE THOUSAND GALLONS OF GAS. TO FIND OUT HOW *YOU* CAN TAKE PART IN THIS YEAR’S CHALLENGE CHECK OUT THE D-O-I WEBSITE.

THAT’S THIS WEEK, AT INTERIOR.
