THIS WEEK, AT INTERIOR

 

USING HIS AUTHORITY UNDER THE ANTIQUITIES ACT,

PRESIDENT OBAMA THIS WEEK DESIGNATED FIVE

NEW NATIONAL MONUMENTS THAT CELEBRATE OUR

NATION’S RICH HISTORY AND NATURAL HERITAGE.

THE MONUMENTS, LOCATED IN DELAWARE, MARYLAND,

NEW MEXICO, OHIO AND WASHINGTON, HELP TELL THE

STORY OF SIGNIFICANT PEOPLE AND EXTRAORDINARY

EVENTS IN AMERICAN HISTIROY, AS WELL AS PROTECT

UNIQUE NATURAL RESOURCES FOR THE BENEFIT OF

ALL AMERICANS. THE MONUMENTS ALSO SERVE AS

ECONOMIC ENGINES FOR LOCAL COMMUNITIES

 

SECRETARY SALAZAR IS TAKING A TOUR OF THE

MONUMENTS… FIRST STOP WAS THE FIRST STATE

NATIONAL MONUMENT IN DELAWARE WITH VICE

PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN… FOLLOWED BY THE HARRIET

TUBMAN UNDERGROUND RAILROAD NATIONAL

MONUMENT ON MARYLAND’S EASTERN SHORE.

SATURDAY THE SECRETARY IS SCHEDULED TO VISIT

THE RIO GRANDE DEL NORTE NATIONAL MONUMENT

IN NEW MEXICO… THE SAN JUAN ISLANDS NATIONAL

MONUMENT IN WASHINGTON ON MONDAY, THEN

WRAPPING UP HIS TOUR NEXT TUESDAY WITH A VISIT

TO THE CHARLES YOUNG BUFFALO SOLDIERS NATIONAL

MONUMENT IN WILBERFORCE, OHIO.

 

AN EMOTIONAL SENDOFF THIS WEEK FOR SECRETARY

SALAZAR AT THE DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR’S

YATES AUDITORIUM. THE SECRETARY IS STEPPING

DOWN IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS AND RETURNING TO

HIS HOMESTATE OF COLORADO. IN HIS SPEECH THE

SECRETARY THANKED HIS FAMILY FOR SUPPORTING

HIM OVER THE YEARS AND THANKED ALL OF INTERIOR’S

EMPLOYEES… HE SAID HE WAS PROUD OF THE

DEPARTMENT’S EFFORTS TO INCREASE RENEWABLE

AND CONVENTIONAL ENERGY DEVELOPMENT ON

PUBLIC LANDS AND DECREASE DEPENDENCE ON

FOREIGN OIL… HE POINTED TO THE SUCCESSES OF THE

AMERICA’S GREAT OUTDOORS INITIATIVE, AND THE

ONGOING EFFORTS TO STRENGTHEN GOVERNMENT-TO-

GOVERNMENT RELATIONS WITH THE NATION’S FIRST

AMERICANS. FINALLY HE POINTED TO HIS OWN LIFE

STORY, AS AN EXAMPLE OF HOW FAR ANYONE CAN GO

WITH HARD WORK, AND THE LOVE AND SUPPORT OF A

FAMILY.

 

If we have faith in the future and we have faith in

ourselves, we can create a more perfect America, and we

can create a more perfect world.

TO PROTECT THOSE ECOSYSTEMS WHILE PROVIDING

SUBSTAINABLE COMMERCIAL, RECREATIONAL

AND CULTURAL USES… INCREASING KNOWLEDGE,

INFORMATION AND AWARENESS ON ENVIRONMENTAL

IMPACTS, AND MOTIVATING ACTION TO SAFEGUARD
