THIS WEEK AT INTERIOR..

ANOTHER HISTORIC MILESTONE IN THE PRESIDENT’S BOLD CLIMATE ACTION PLAN.  THE ADMINISTRATION THIS WEEK RELEASED THE CLEAN POWER PLAN PROPOSAL, WHICH FOR THE FIRST TIME CUTS CARBON POLLUTION FROM EXISTING POWER PLANTS. THE PROPOSAL COULD PREVENT AS MANY AS 150-THOUSAND ASTHMA ATTACKS IN CHILDREN EACH YEAR, WHILE ALSO HELPING TO COMBAT THE EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE, MOVE THE UNITED STATES TOWARD A CLEANER ENVIRONMENT WHILE SUPPLYING AMERICANS WITH RELIABLE AND AFFORDABLE POWER.

AS PRESIDENT, AND AS A PARENT, I REFUSE TO CONDEMN OUR CHILDREN TO A PLANET THAT’S BEYOND FIXING. THE SHIFT TO A CLEANER ENERGY ECONOMY WON’T HAPPEN OVERNIGHT, AND IT WILL REQUIRE TOUGH CHOICES ALONG THE WAY. BUT A LOW-CARBON CLEAN ENERGY ECONOMY CAN BE AN ENGINE FOR GROWTH FOR DECADES TO COME. AMERICA WILL BUILD THAT ENGINE. AMERICA WILL BUILD THE FUTURE.

SECRETARY JEWELL SAID THE PRESIDENT UNDERSTANDS WE HAVE A MORAL OBLIGATION TO FUTURE GENERATIONS TO LEAVE OUR LAND, WATER, AND WILDLIFE BETTER THAN WE FOUND IT.

THE SECRETARY TRAVELED TO VIRGINIA THIS WEEK TO TOUR JAMESTOWN ISLAND AND HOST A ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION OF THE IMPACTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON CULTURAL RESOURCES AT HISTORIC JAMESTOWNE, PART OF COLONIAL NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK. THE SECRETARY TOURED AREAS PREVIOUSLY AFFECTED BY FLOODING… AREAS EXPECTED TO FLOOD AGAIN AS SEA LEVELS RISE. JAMESTOWN ONE OF 30 CASE STUDIES OF ICONIC HISTORIC AND CULTURAL SITES MOST AT RISK FROM CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACTS. TWO THIRDS OF JAMESTOWN ISLAND IS LESS THAN FIVE FEET ABOVE SEA LEVEL.

ONE OF ALASKA’S MOST ACTIVE VOLCANOES IS ERUPTING… THE USGS SAYS MOUNT PAVLOF IN THE ALEUTIAN ISLANDS HAS BEEN PUMPING OUT STEAM AND ASH IN A LOW-LEVEL ERUPTION SINCE LAST FRIDAY… THE PLUME HAS REACHED AS HIGH AS 24-THOUSAND FEET ABOVE SEA LEVEL, AND EXTENDS SOME 50 MILES TO THE SOUTHEAST, PRESENTING A HAZARD TO LOCAL AIR TRAFFIC… SO FAR NO REPORTS OF ASH FALLING ON LOCAL COMMUNITIES. CHECK OUT THE LATEST ON MOUNT PAVLOF AT USGS.GOV.

AND 50 BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT SMOKEJUMPERS ARE REMEMBERING ONE OF THEIR OWN… MARK URBAN, AN 11-YEAR VETERAN BLM SMOKEJUMPER, DIED LAST SEPTEMBER IN A PARACHUTE ACCIDENT. NOW HE’S BEING HONORED WITH A ONE-MILE SEGMENT OF HIKING AND BIKING TRAIL IN THE BOISE FOOTHILLS. THE SMOKEJUMPERS GATHERED LAST MONTH TO RE-ROUTE SOME EXISTING TRAILS, CONSTRUCT SWITCHBACKS, AND INSTALL EROSION CONTROL FEATURES… ALL TO HONOR A FALLEN COLLEAGUE WHO LOVED BIKING IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS.

THAT’S THIS WEEK AT INTERIOR.
