THIS WEEK, AT INTERIOR…

 

MORE THAN 260 LATINO YOUTH LEADERS IN NEVADA WERE GUESTS OF THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE, THE U.S. FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE, THE BUREAU OF RECLAMATION AND THE BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT THIS WEEK… IT WAS ALL PART OF AN EFFORT TO BOOST LATINO PARTICIPATION IN STEM PROGRAMS… STEM AS IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATH. THE HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE AGE STUDENTS RAFTED IN THE COLORADO RIVER, HIKED RED ROCK CANYON AND TOOK A BEHIND THE SCENES TOUR OF THE HOOVER DAM… AS THEY GOT A FIRST HAND LOOK AT ALL THE SCIENCE BASED CAREERS AT THE DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR.

 

THE ONE-POINT-NINE BILLION DOLLAR LAND BUYBACK PROGRAM ESTABLISHED UNDER THE COBELL SETTLEMENT TOOK SEVERAL STEPS FORWARD THIS WEEK… INTERIOR OFFICIALS ANNOUNCED THEY’VE LAUNCHED EFFORTS TO ESTABLISH AGREEMENTS WITH SEVERAL TRIBAL NATIONS TO HELP CONSOLIDATE OWNERSHIP OF HIGHLY FRACTIONATED TRUST LANDS FOPR THE BENEFICIAL USE OF TRIBAL NATIONS. WITH A SOLID FOUNDATION BUILT ON GOVERNMENT TO GOVERNMENT CONSULTATION, THE DEPARTMENT IS NOW PREPARED TO BEGIN WORKING WITH TRIBAL NATIONS, AND EXPECTS TO MAKE INITIAL OFFERS BY THE END OF THIS YEAR THAT WILL HELP UNLOCK THESE LANDS FOR TRIBAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND SELF GOVERNANCE PURPOSES. SCIENTISTS AT THE U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY TRYING TO STEM THE SPREAD OF ASIAN CARP IN THE GREAT LAKES BASIN... A NEW SURVEY FROM USGS SHOWS THAT TWO ASIAN CARP SPECIES – SILVER AND BIGHEAD CARP – MAY BE ABLE TO SPAWN IN MORE AREA RIVERS THAN PREVIOUSLY ESTIMATED. THE INFORMATION IN THE SURVEY COULD BE A KEY WEAPON IN CONTROLLING THE SPREAD OF THE INVASIVE SPECIES, AND PREVENTING ASIAN CARP FROM BECOMING ESTABLISHED THROUGHOUT THE GREAT LAKES BASIN.

 

THE LARGEST BATTLE IN THE HISTORY OF THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE WILL BE REMEMBERED THIS MONTH, A CENTURY AND A HALF AFTER THE LAST CANNON FELL SILENT. THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE WILL COMMEMORATE THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG WITH A WEEK-LONG, 150TH ANNIVERSARY EVENT STARTING JUNE 29TH… ALL OF IT MARKING THE THREE DAY BATTLE IN JULY OF 1863 THAT MANY CONSIDER TO BE THE TURNING POINT OF THE CIVIL WAR.
