HI, MY NAME IS ROB MACLEAN, ACTING CHIEF OF THE U.S. PARK POLICE, AND YOU’RE WATCHING THIS WEEK AT INTERIOR.

THIS WEEK AT INTERIOR…

SECRETARY JEWELL ON HAND THIS WEEK FOR THE OFFICIAL LAUNCH OF THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE’S LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL AND TRANSGENDERED HERITAGE THEME STUDY… THE STUDY BRINGS TOGETHER SCHOLARS, HISTORIC PRESERVATIONISTS, AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO IDENTIFY, RESEARCH AND TELL THE STORIES OF LGBT-ASSOCIATED SITES ACROSS THE COUNTRY, AND TO INTERPRET THE LGBT STORY AS A PART OF THE OVERALL STORY OF AMERICA.

NOT ONLY REMEMBRANCE, BUT THEY ALSO SHOW US THE FUTURE. THEY SYMBOLIZE WHAT THIS NATION INTENDS TO BE, BUT PERHAPS HAS NOT YET BECOME. AND THAT IS WHY IT IS ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL THAT WE INCLUDE THE EXPERIENCE OF THE LGBT COMMUNITY AND ITS STRUGGLE FOR CIVIL RIGHTS IN THE STORIES THAT WE TELL ON BEHALF OF THE NATION.

TODAY’S ACTIONS ARE THE FRUITS OF A TREE THAT WAS PLANTED LONG AGO. A TREE TESTED BY TIME… WATERED BY TEARS OF SADNESS AND JOY… AND MADE STRONG BY THE BLOOD AND SACRIFICE OF COUNTLESS HEROES.

YOU CAN FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE LGBT THEME STUDY, AND OTHER THEME STUDIES, AT NPS.GOV.

THE GROWTH IN INTERNATIONAL VISITATION HAS CREATED ABOUT 175,000 NEW JOBS IN THE PAST FIVE YEARS.

AND AT THE WGA MEETING THIS WEEK SECRETARY JEWELL ANNOUNCED NEARLY 20-MILLION DOLLARS IN WATERSMART FUNDING FOR WATER AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY PROJECTS, ALONG WITH RIVER BASIN STUDIES… THAT FUNDING WILL HELP COMMUNITIES IN THE WEST DEFINE OPTIONS FOR MEETING FUTURE WATER DEMANDS, CONSERVE WATER IN THE FACE OF CLIMATE CHANGE, AND INCREASE THE USE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY.
