Secretary Salazar on Appointment of the Wildlife and Hunting Heritage Council

July 23, 2010

Video will appear here.

Transcript

Hello, I am Ken Salazar, Secretary of the Department of Interior.

Dating back to President Theodore Roosevelt, our nation’s hunters have taken the lead in the conservation of wildlife and its habitat. They have contributed billions of dollars through licenses, permits, and excise taxes to conservation programs. They have been among the most ardent volunteers through a wide variety of sportsmen’s organizations.

Conservation in America would be a shadow of what it is today were it not for hunters and other sportsmen and women. It is vitally important that we keep America’s hunting heritage strong.

In February, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and I announced the formation of the Wildlife and Hunting Heritage Conservation Council. This is a new federal advisory panel to provide advice on developing policies and actions we can take to preserve America’s hunting heritage for future generations and to support hunters in their conservation efforts.

I am pleased to announce today that we have chosen 18 of our nation’s leading sportsmen-conservationists to serve on this council. You can find the full list of these men and women at www.doi.gov.

I look forward to working closely with the members of the council. Together we will work to keep America’s hunting heritage strong.

Together, we will build on the proud conservation legacy of the American hunting community.
