Secretary Jewell to Join Sen. Reed in Rhode Island to Highlight Economic, Recreational Value of Parks, Trails, Waterways

Will kick off National Trails Day with kayak trip down Blackstone River

05/30/2013

CUMBERLAND, RI – On Friday, May 31, Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell and National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis will join U.S. Senator Jack Reed at the John H. Chafee Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor to highlight the economic and recreational value of national parks, national wildlife refuges, waterways and other public lands. The visit will include kayaking down the Blackstone River waterway, in advance of National Trails Day on Saturday, June 1.

Tourism and outdoor recreation are huge economic engines for local communities across the nation. In Rhode Island, the Roger Williams National Memorial had an estimated 52,000 visitors in 2012 with a $3 million economic benefit to the state. The outdoor recreation economy in the state is estimated to generate $2.4 billion in consumer spending and 24,000 direct jobs, according to a report by the Outdoor Industry Association.

Jewell, Jarvis and Reed will also meet with community leaders to discuss the Obama Administration's efforts to boost conservation, as well as progress being made to establish a new national historical park within the Blackstone River Valley to interpret the role the area played in the Industrial Revolution and provide outdoor recreational opportunities for visitors.
