Secretary Jewell Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Landmark Conservation Laws

Secretary Jewell Announces Additional $1 Million to Fund Urban Engagement Efforts at Southern California Wildlife Refuges

Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell announced that the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge Complex will receive an additional $1 million in funding to reach new audiences and engage southern California urban communities and youth in conservation and outdoor recreation. The refuge is the first among the nation's urban national wildlife refuges to receive this new award through a nationwide competition.

Secretary Jewell Visits California Wildland Fire Operations Center

Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell visited the Northern California Geographic Area Coordination Center (North Ops) in Redding, California, where she met with members of the interagency fire leadership team and employees from the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service and toured on-the-ground fuels management projects in the surrounding area. Jewell was joined by federal and state leadership, including John Laird, California Secretary for Natural Resources; Ken Pimlott, Director of CAL FIRE and Jim Douglas, Director of the Interior Department's Office of Wildland Fire.

Secretary Jewell Announces $43 Million to States for Parks and Outdoor Recreation through Land Water Conservation Fund

Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell joined Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price, co-chair of the bipartisan coalition of Mayors for Parks, to announce that $43.38 million will be distributed from the Land and Water Conservation Fund to all 50 States, the Territories and the District of Columbia for state-identified outdoor recreation and conservation projects.

Secretary Jewell Announces Conservation Success Story in Down-listing of Wood Stork

Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell announced that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is down-listing the wood stork from endangered to threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), reflecting a highly successful conservation and recovery effort spanning three decades. Jewell made the announcement at the Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge, home to the largest wood stork rookery in Georgia.

Secretary Jewell and Governor Patrick Announce the Nation’s Largest Offshore Wind Energy Area Available for Commercial Development

As part of President Obama's Climate Action Plan to create American jobs, develop clean energy resources and cut carbon pollution, Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell and Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) Acting Director Walter Cruickshank joined Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick to announce more than 742,000 acres offshore Massachusetts will be available for commercial wind energy leasing. The proposed area is the largest in federal waters and will nearly double the federal offshore acreage available for commercial-scale wind energy projects.

Secretary Jewell Announces $102 Million in Coastal Resilience Grants to Help Atlantic Coast Communities Protect Themselves from Future Storms

As part of the Obama Administration's commitment in the Climate Action Plan to make local communities more resilient against future storms, Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell announced $102.7 million in competitive matching grants to support 54 projects along the Atlantic coast. The grants will fund science-based solution to restore wetlands and other natural areas, better manage stormwater using green infrastructure and assist states, tribal and local communities in protecting themselves from major storms such as Hurricane Sandy, which devasated much of the East Coast in 2012.
