CARLSBAD and ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – On Thursday, Jan. 5, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar will wrap-up his two-day trip promoting the economic benefits behind tourism, energy, water, and conservation in Western rural communities with a stop in New Mexico. In Albuquerque, Salazar will join U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Director Dan Ashe, Bureau of Reclamation Commissioner Mike Connor, and Senator Jeff Bingaman at a stakeholder meeting to learn about ongoing conservation initiatives taking place in the Middle Rio Grande. Site of Albuquerque’s recently established urban wildlife refuge, the area holds countless opportunities to connect urban populations to nature, a key objective in President Obama’s America’s Great Outdoors initiative.

Earlier in the day, Salazar, Bingaman, and Bureau of Land Management Director Bob Abbey will attend a Potash /Oil and Gas Steering Committee Meeting in Carlsbad. Following the meeting, participants will discuss recent, positive movements by both the oil and gas and potash industries regarding long-standing conflicts within the Secretary’s Potash Area (SPA) during a media availability.
