Join the Conversation on America's Great Outdoors

04/16/2010

Today I was proud to join President Obama, CEQ Chair Nancy Sutley, Secretary Tom Vilsack and EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson at the White House Conference on America’s Great Outdoors. The conference brought together some of the top leaders from around the country that are working to protect outdoor spaces. President Obama also signed a Presidential Memorandum establishing the America’s Great Outdoors Initiative to promote and support innovative community-level efforts to conserve outdoor spaces and to reconnect Americans to the outdoors.

This conference is just the beginning. Over the next few months, Chair Sutley, Secretary Vilscak, and Administrator Jackson and I will hold a series of town hall meetings and listening sessions across the country to start a national dialogue on 21st century conservation agenda.

We are bringing together ranchers, farmers and forest landowners, sportsmen and women, state and local government leaders, tribal leaders, public-lands experts, conservationists, youth leaders, business representatives, and others to learn about some of the smart, creative ways communities are conserving outdoor spaces.

We also want to hear from you. On the America’s Great Outdoors website, we’ve set up an online tool for visitors to submit their ideas about how we can reconnect Americans with the great outdoors and support public and private conservation efforts across the country. I invite you to join the conversation today. We look forward to your ideas about protecting our Great Outdoors.
