Three mining companies were presented with the first ever Good Neighbor Awards at a ceremony in Washington D.C. The companies were recognized for their interaction with their local communities in solving problems from reclamation to flooding.

"One year we were under water, portions of our farm, eleven times."

That's farmer Robert Stone of Boonville, Indiana. The Vigo coal company incorporated flood control structures in its reclamation plan. In the process they worked with the community to create a 45 acre wetland habitat.

"It's beautiful. They have put native grasses, all these wetland trees, it preserves the soil. The water coming into the system, you can see the brown and so forth and the soil erosion and so forth. And going out exiting, it's clear."

Vigo hauled away approximately two million yards of soil to create 250 acre feet of storm water storage to prevent flooding. Ron Tull, Interior Department Radio News Service, Washington.
