Three coal companies received good neighbor awards in Washington D.C. last week with the highest recognition going to the Peabody Western Coal Company. They mine land near Monument Valley, Arizona on both Navajo and Hopi Reservations. Arnold Taylor, from the Hopi tribes' Department of Natural Resources says the company reclaimed more than 12,000 acres

"What we, both Navajo and the Hopi tribe, wanted was that they bring that back to its near natural state and it some cases I think that may have been exceeded."

Arvin Trujillo of the Navajo Department of Natural Resources says it's a "give and take" relationship.

"As we go through this learning phase, we've both grown in our sophistication. Understanding that there are some areas where we can agree to disagree. To me, that's the essence of being a neighbor."

The companies and the tribes are important to one another. 90 percent of Peabody's workforce is Native American. Ron Tull, Interior Department Radio News Service, Washington.
