Secretary Kempthorne to Announce Funding for Lake Tahoe, Southern and Eastern Nevada Conservation and Recreation Projects

WASHINGTON, D.C.-On Saturday, August 16, 2008, Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne will announce the next round of funding under the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act to improve landscapes, protect vital water resources, and develop new recreational facilities in Nevada and California.

He will be speaking in the Environmental Forum of the twelfth annual Lake Tahoe Summit at the Valhalla Estate, located at the Tallac Historic Site on Highway 89 in South Lake Tahoe. The event begins at 9 a.m.

Under the Act, about 85 percent of the revenue from U.S. public land sales in the Las Vegas Valley is invested in projects that benefit and protect the citizens of Nevada. Five percent of the revenue goes to the State of Nevada General Education Fund and 10 percent to the Southern Nevada Water Authority.

Participating in the forum will be U.S. Senators Dianne Feinstein and Harry Reid; California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons, federal administrators, and state and local elected officials.
