Regulations Proposed for Oil Shale Program
that Could Produce up to 800 Billion Barrels of Oil

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Tuesday, July 22, 2008, Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne will announce proposed regulations to establish a commercial oil shale program that could result in the addition of up to 800 billion barrels of recoverable oil from public lands in the western United States.

Kempthorne will be joined by C. Stephen Allred, Assistant Secretary for Land and Minerals Management, and Deputy Assistant Secretary Foster Wade. Credentialed media are invited to participate in a moderated teleconference announcing the draft regulations and a media availability with the speakers. The call begins at 3:10 p.m. Eastern Time.
