Secretary Norton to Sign International Bird Conservation Initiative,
Announce Grants to Help Conserve Migratory Birds

(WASHINGTON) - Interior Secretary Gale Norton will celebrate International Migratory Bird Day by signing the tri-national North American Bird Conservation Initiative Declaration of Intent at a meeting on May 17 in Washington with representatives of Canada and Mexico and a number of conservation groups. The initiative is an agreement between Canada, Mexico and the United States to cooperate on the conservation of migratory birds.

Norton will also announce $3.9 million in grants to conserve migratory birds in 18 states, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and 25 Latin American and Caribbean countries.
Grants are being awarded in the following states: Alabama, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Washington.
