Norton Announces Approval of New Gaming Compacts
Between California and Five Native American Tribes

Interior Secretary Gale Norton today announced federal approval of amendments to gaming compacts signed in June by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and five Native American tribes. The compacts provide significant additional revenue for the state and benefits for local communities while protecting the tribes' exclusive gaming rights.

"This new financial partnership is a win-win for the people of California and these tribes," Norton said.

"I thank Secretary Norton for approving these fair contribution compacts," Schwarzenegger said. "These agreements signal the beginning of a new partnership between the state, local communities and sovereign Tribal Governments. A relationship based on trust, cooperation and mutual benefit. I thank the Secretary for her approval."

The new compacts, which will last until 2030, amend existing compacts between the state of California and the Pala Band of Mission Indians, the Pauma Band of Luiseño Indians, the Rumsey Band of Wintun Indians, the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians and the United Auburn Indian Community.

Federal law provides the Interior Department 45 days to review gaming compacts between states and tribes.
