Secretary Norton, Colorado Gov. Owens to Discuss Colorado River Water Pact

(DENVER, COLORADO) On Friday, October 17, 2003, Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton will meet with Colorado Gov. Bill Owens to discuss the Colorado River Water Delivery Agreement and its impact on the state.

Norton and representatives of California water agencies officially signed the historic pact today at Hoover Dam. The Agreement, which fulfills a solemn promise California made in 1929 to limit its use of Colorado River water to 4.4 million acre-feet, requires California to take specific, incremental steps to reduce its over-reliance on Colorado River water during the next 14 years.

The meeting with Gov. Owens will be followed by a news conference on the First Floor of the State Capitol at 2:30 p.m. Secretary Norton will later attend a reception at the Adams Mark Hotel to meet with state and local water officials. The reception is hosted by the Colorado Water Congress, a non-profit state water managers' association.
