OIA Passport and Visa Division

The OIA Passport and Visa Division within DOI's Office of International Affairs is responsible for issuing passports and visas to DOI employees (except BOR and USGS) traveling on official business for the Department of the Interior.  Additionally, the OIA's Passport and Visa Division maintains and stores passports/visas until they are needed.  As necessary, the OIA's Passport and Visa Division communicates with the various embassies and the State Department to ensure the employee has all the necessary documents to successfully complete their travel. The passports office can be reached at passports@ios.doi.gov or 202-208-5292.

In order to have adequate lead-time for processing passports, please provide information 4 - 6 weeks prior to when the passport is needed.  The required form (see below) along with two pictures must accompany the application.

In regards to visas, they vary by embassy but most can be processed within two weeks (although visas for Russia take at least a month).  Employees must submit the DI-1175 Departmental Foreign Travel Approval Form (the DI-1175 need not have final signature approval to start the visa application process).

The safekeeping memo (see below) should only be used by those employees that travel frequently – especially to Canada and Mexico.  Employees should return their passport to the passport office within two weeks of completing their travel.
