“Restoring the Sweetwater Seas”

Monday, July 18, 2011, 8 – 9:25 am

Welcome to CZ11 and to the Great Lakes region. Our “Sweetwater Seas” boast more than 10,000 miles of coastline, more than the entire Atlantic east coast, and are home to invaluable and unique natural resources. Shared between the U.S., Canada and many tribal nations, these enormous inland seas profoundly influence the cultural heritage of the area as well. Paying homage to this rich cultural history, we open CZ 11 with a Native American drumming ceremony and blessing. The opening plenary will continue with an overview of the rich history and dominating role the Great Lakes play in the region. Illinois Governor Pat Quinn will share keynote remarks followed by a thought-provoking, round-table discussion with political leaders sharing their viewpoints on the challenges facing the region and the significant role the coastal area will play in sustaining future environmental and economic development.
