Interior Business Center Begins a Series of Town Hall Meetings with DOI Office of the Secretary Customers

The Interior Business Center has begun a series of town hall meetings with the Department of the Interior's shared services customers, including the Office of the Secretary, with a straightforward purpose: To find out how we're doing and how we can continue to serve our customers better.

Department of the Interior's Deputy Assistant Secretary of Technology, Information and Business Services, Andrew Jackson, opened the first town hall session on May 23, 2013, highlighting our recent accomplishments and restructure to focus on delivering a core set of complementary business services: acquisition, financial management and human resources.

IBC Director Joe Ward provided a brief presentation on our organization changes, strategic focus and Accurate, Courteous and Timely service standards. Joe Ward conveyed the feeling of renewed enthusiasm around our new strategic vision and focus.

Most of the session was then devoted to an informal and frank discussion with customers.

IBC's Customer Relationship Management and Communications team sent out a quick email poll to participants immediately after the meeting to gather additional feedback. Results of the discussion and poll provide a current snapshot: IBC has developed a positive relationship with its OS customers over the last couple of years. In future town hall meetings the leadership team will continue to seek out specific areas for ongoing improvement.

Of approximately 50 participants in the May 23 town hall (either in person or via telephone), 22 responded to the poll emailed to them immediately following the meeting.

Town hall meeting round two focused on acquisition services.

IBC's acquisition experts detailed the elements of a good requirements package and procurement process. A panel of specialists from IBC, the DOI Office of the Secretary Budget Office, the DOI Office of the Chief Information Officer, and the DOI Office of the Solicitor answered questions from participants.

Over 50 people participated in the event either in person or through telephone bridge lines. 

IBC's Associate Director for Acquisition Services, Keith O'Neill, opened the session emphasizing the importance of following the Federal Acquisitions Regulations for all government procurement actions.

AQD branch chief Caroline Wallace covered roles and responsibilities in the acquisition process and offered several templates, checklists, and other resources to customers to support their efforts in the initial, and critical, steps in the process.

The session concluded with a panel of experts from several Office of the Secretary organizations involved in the acquisition process: Keith O'Neill (IBC-AQD), Mark Teskey (Office of the Solicitor), Jim Thornberry (OCIO), Kimberly Prendergast (OS Budget Office), Caroline Wallace (IBC-AQD) and Matt Shigley (IBC-AQD). Remote participants engaged with the panel by sending their questions and comments via online chat.
