Voices From the Four Directions

Voices From the Four Directions is an exhibition of nine Community Spirit Award recipients who respectively represent a voice and spirit from each cardinal direction. This exhibition is at the apex of form and expression from tribal communities who have chosen and nominated a living treasure. These extraordinary artists all share a common commitment to maintaining tribal heritage and culture through their art. These Community Spirit Award recipients are hereby honored for teaching and aiding in the restoration of tribal traditions by generously sharing their talents and attributes within their communities and abroad through this special exhibition.
Each piece of artwork is a tangible voice that articulates a geographic place and culture of each artist. From the West, North, East and South are the art mediums that exemplify the love, study, perseverance and talent that personify a meaningful form of leadership that emanates from the Collective Spirit of these Community Spirit Artists. The story-telling honored in this exhibit personifies the healing, strengthening and preservation of a cultural identity. The artistic cultural accuracy of the displayed basketry portrays years of study, mentoring through worthiness and seasonal efforts to gather the natural material needed. Such forms of art display an intrinsic holistic process that is a relationship with this planet, Mother Earth. The textiles, rawhide, and beadwork further reflects the ingenuity, utilitarian beauty and the living heritage of cultures that are still connected to the stars and landscape.
