Definition:
Absence from duty without charge to leave for up to 3 days to make arrangements for, or attend the funeral services of an immediate relative who dies as a result of an injury, disease, or wounds incurred while serving as a member of the Armed Forces in a combat zone.

Additional Definitions:
Combat Zone: Those areas of combat as determined by the President in accordance with Internal Revenue Code 112.
Immediate Relative:

  • spouse and parents thereof,
  • children including adopted children, and spouses thereof,
  • brothers and sisters, and spouses thereof
  • parents, and
  • individual related by blood or affinity whose close association is the equivalent of a family relationship.

Sick leave shall be granted by the agency to an employee for making arrangements necessitated by the death of a family member or to attend the funeral of a family member. The definition of a family member is the same as "immediate relative" defined above. See "sick leave" (Family Friendly Leave Act) and 5 CFR 630.401 for guidance on the amount of leave which may be granted under this provision.
