The following are legal public holidays:

  • New Year's Day, January 1

  • Martin Luther King's Birthday, 3rd Monday in January

  • Washington's Birthday, 3rd Monday in February

  • Memorial Day, last Monday in May

  • Independence Day, July 4

  • Labor Day, 1st Monday in September

  • Columbus Day, 2nd Monday in October

  • Veterans Day, November 11

  • Thanksgiving Day, 4th Thursday in November

  • Christmas Day, December 25

  • Inauguration Day, January 20 of each 4th year (employees in the District of Columbia; Montgomery and Prince Georges Counties in Maryland; Arlington and Fairfax Counties and the the cities of Alexandria and Falls Church in Virginia)


There may be times when other days are declared to be holidays by Federal statute or Executive order.

Employees who are excused from duty because a holiday falls within their basic workweek and regularly scheduled tour of duty are entitled to their basic rate of pay for that day. Employees who are required to work on a holiday within their basic workweek are entitled to holiday premium pay.
