The Social Security Act, into which the Federal unemployment insurance law was incorporated, does not require State unemployment insurance laws to be uniform, therefore, state eligibility and disqualification, amount and duration of payment, etc., will differ considerably between states.

To be entitled to benefits a person must be:

  • Unemployed

  • Able to work

  • Be available for work

  • Must not be disqualified for any of a number of reasons specified in the State law, such as for:
  • Voluntarily leaving job without good cause

  • Misconduct connected with his/her work

  • Refusal of suitable work without good cause
