Environmental Achievement Awards Recipients

Serving as the park’s Hazardous Materials Coordinator, Sustainability Coordinator, as well as the maintenance program supervisor, Mr. Durbin has taken the lead in recycling activities, hazard waste reduction, “green procurement,” and in generally promoting environmental awareness within the park and local community, as well as within the Intermountain Region.

The parking lot lighting at park headquarters is now powered by a solar-powered system and interpreted with a wayside display designed by the park’s Interpretive Division. Mr. Durbin secured NPS funding and grants from other agencies to convert numerous park facilities from propane and AC power over to 12V solar systems. In addition, the Echo Park and Deerlodge Ranger Stations now have solar lighting, refrigeration and swamp coolers, which are in full view to visitors at these locations. Developing and showcasing alternative energy sources to staff and visitors to Dinosaur National Monument helps Interior achieve energy independence and demonstrates the Department’s commitment to being a good steward of the environment.
