Mobilizing the combined efforts of Park and park concessioner employees, Mammoth Cave National Park and the Mammoth Cave Hotel launched a comprehensive environmental leadership program following the joint development of their particularly thorough "Strategic Plan for Environmental Leadership." The Plan begins with personal messages from the Park Superintendent and the Senior Vice President of Forever/NCP Resort Operations. Mr. Bill Butts, Forever/NCP Resorts, states "… we hope that we can compliment the efforts of the Superintendent and the staff at Mammoth Cave National Park to make this Park a flagship of environmental excellence in the National Park system." The Plan's twenty-six succinct pages present a clear outline for environmental stewardship, a dedication to partnership, and nine clearly articulated goals and over 100 quantifiable objectives. Copies of the Plan were provided to all Park employees, to all National Parks in the region, and to community leaders and Park partners. As a result of this experience, Forever/NCP Resorts has made a corporate decision to implement an environmental leadership program at all of its properties in National Parks and other locations. The Park and Hotel have many environmentally preferable practices ranging from alternatively fueled vehicles, water saving fixtures, energy saving electronics, a strong recycling program, and an environmentally preferable procurement program. Wanting to share their expertise the Park and Hotel jointly hosted an Environmental Leadership Workshop for over 50 participants including NPS employees, local government representatives, other federal agency staff members, and private businesses.
