Sharing Stewardship Skills
Kent Bullard, NPS
Kent Bullard, a maintenance mechanic supervisor at Channel Islands National Park, is recognized for his commitment to learning and sharing knowledge of sustainable practices. Projects he has championed have included conversion of fleet vehicles to natural gas and biolubricants (made from plants, not petroleum), introduction of biodiesel to the boat fleet operation, and development of highly efficient waste management practices required for an island park setting. These are some of the accomplishments that have resulted from Kent Bullard’s focus on environmental stewardship. Channel Islands National Park, fortunately, is not the only beneficiary of his work. Mr. Bullard has applied the knowledge and experience he’s gained in the sustainability arena toward the betterment of the entire National Park Service. For the past five years, he has provided vital web development service for the NPS Environmental Leadership and Green Energy Programs, by creating and maintaining the Renew website (www.nps.gov/renew) where NPS and other facility managers can learn about the efforts of others who are working toward these same goals. He has provided many formal presentations on sustainable maintenance and operations practices within DOI and across local government forums. Additionally, he organized a very popular hands-on workshop on solar panel installation for local parks’ staff.
