U.S. Department of the Interior Employees Winner, Finalist for Prestigious Service to America Medal
The Partnership for Public Service, a nonprofit organization, honored an Office of Surface Mining program analyst on Sept. 23 with one of its 2009 Service to America medals. PPS also named a U.S. Geological Survey scientist and her international science team as finalists for the same award.
2009 Environment Medal winner T. Alan Comp, a program analyst with OSM, built a network of volunteers who address environmental and economic issues in coal-producing states. Comp founded and coordinates the Appalachian Coal Country Watershed Team and the Western Hardrock Watershed Team, which are part of a joint initiative between OSM and Volunteers in Service to America. USGS scientist Leslie Holland-Bartels and her International Polar Bear Science Team, finalists for the same award, determined a link between climate change and probable elimination of the polar bear in the next 45 to 75 years. While this project focused on the polar bear, Holland-Bartels and her team also laid groundwork for researching the effects of climate change. Learn more.
