Carl J. Artman

Carl J. Artman, an enrolled member of the Oneida Tribe of Indians of Wisconsin, was confirmed by the United States Senate as the Assistant Secretary – Indian Affairs for the U.S. Department of the Interior on March 5, 2007. He had served as the Department’s Associate Solicitor for Indian Affairs since February of 2006.

Mr. Artman is the tenth Assistant Secretary – Indian Affairs to be confirmed since the position was established by Congress in the 1970s. In addition to carrying out the Department’s trust responsibilities regarding the management of tribal and individual Indian trust lands and assets, the Assistant Secretary is responsible for promoting the self-determination and economic self-sufficiency of the nation’s 561 federally recognized American Indian and Alaska Native tribes and their 1.9 million enrolled members.

Mr. Artman has legal and business experience that includes working for the Oneida Tribe as Director of Federal Affairs and Chief Legal Counsel, and for Airadigm Communications of Little Chute, WI, an Oneida Tribe-owned telecommunications venture, as Chief Operating Officer.

Mr. Artman received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia College in Missouri, a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a juris doctorate from the Washington University – St. Louis, MO, and an LLM in Natural Resources and Environmental Law from the University of Denver. He is licensed to practice law in Wisconsin, Colorado and Pennsylvania.
